How my short stint as a football coach helped me with my career in sales.
Before stepping fully into sales, I spent time coaching football, and looking back, that experience helped shape many of the skills I use every day in my sales career. Coaching taught me quickly that communication is everything. Whether you are explaining a play, motivating players, or making adjustments during a game, you have to know how to connect with different personalities and get everyone working toward the same goal. Sales works much the same way. Every customer is different, and being able to communicate clearly while building trust is one of the biggest parts of creating long-term business relationships.
Coaching football also taught me patience and preparation. Not every game goes according to plan, and not every player develops at the same speed. You learn how to stay organized, adjust on the fly, and continue pushing toward the end result. In sales, that same mindset is critical. Some deals move fast while others take time, and obstacles come up constantly. Being able to stay focused, keep following up, and adapt when needed has been a major advantage for me.
Most importantly, coaching taught me leadership. A good coach has to be dependable, accountable, and willing to put others in the best position to succeed. I carry that same mentality into working with customers. My goal has always been to provide guidance, solve problems, and help clients make the best decision possible. The leadership foundation built through football has played a big role in the salesperson I am today.
